Favicon’s are short website Icon’s of 16×16 or 32×32 pixel size in general that gets displayed to the left of your Website Address in the Browser Screen. These Favicon’s are associated with an website or an webpage,they can be static or animated & they give extra bit of Identity to your website.

How To Add A Favicon To Your WordPress Site

If you want to Add a Favicon for your WordPress Blog, please follow the steps outlined below.The instructions provided here only apply to a Self Hosted WordPress blog, but if you are an WordPress.com user these steps doesn’t work for you as you don’t have access to all the files.

STEP 1 : To add Favicon to your WordPress Blog, the first requirement is to get an image file of type  .ico in 16X16 or 32X32 pixel size.If you are using the services of an Professional webDesigner they does the Job for you.But if you are trying to prepare a Favicon by yourself,you can use the Services of  free Favicon Generator websites like favicon.cc ,Favicon.co.uk etc.

You can generate a Favicon based on your Logo or your Website name or by your Website Niche Category.After generating the Favicon lets name it favicon.ico

STEP 2 :Now Upload the file to your Hosting Account using FTP.In general I would place my favicon in the root directory of my Hosting Account or in a place where all my Images Files related to Theme reside.If you are not familiar with FTP,then you can upload the Favicon using WordPress Media Uploader.

Now take a note of the Path where Favicon is located.

STEP 3 :Now add the below line of code to header.php by using the Theme editing functionality available from the WordPress Admin Dashboard.

Ex:   <link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://bloghunk.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/favicon.ico" >

To add Favicon some times you may need to edit your themes function.php file & add the below lines of code

<?php }
add_action('wp_head', 'add_favicon');

After completing saving Header.php file or Functions.php please refresh your browser to see if the changes got reflected, else clear the browser history & reopen your website.
